Creative Parenting with Harry Potter

How our family utilizes concepts from a magical world to encourage hard work.

Despite the monstrosity that the author has revealed herself as being, Harry Potter is an important factor in parenting my four kids. More than likely, we would not use these parenting approaches if the kids did not all enjoy the series of books, but we’re lucky enough to have a house full of Potter fans.

At various points in time, we had all four of our children take the sorting quiz. Would you believe all of them were sorted in different houses?

My oldest son is a Ravenclaw, my second oldest son is a Gryffindor, my older daughter is a Slytherin, and my youngest daughter is a Hufflepuff.

Mom and Dad are Ravenclaws.

Naturally, that gave us an inclination to incorporate some magical ideas into encouraging our own little Hogwarts students to work harder, behave better, and help one another.

Since all of our children are in different houses, points are awarded to their individual houses for a variety of reasons:

But what do they do with the points?

Well, in the books, house points total up at the end of the year to win a House cup. The cup is nothing more than a bragging point and a sense of glory. We wanted to expand on that idea, so we created a point store.
