The chink in Aphrodite

That she was Venus-beautiful . . . none could counter.

Full of wit . . . even I‘d confer that accolade.

But an anchor to my soul? Few knew that, but it was true notwithstanding.

Don’t get it twisted. I loved her. We had tender, passionate times aplenty. But that‘s un-enough.

Femme Fatale only gets you so far, And I’d ridden that bus down the line.

What she was missing was that “helping spirit”. Her unwanted ingredient: the fisselig component.

It showed up everywhere. When I was fixing the fence. Cutting the tree. Schmoozing certain people at Corporate. She was always right there with her ready-to-disapprove eyes.

The effect on my performance? I wish I could elucidate.

It’s easier to explain the opposite.

When a cheerleader stands your side, worlds stabilize, winds calm, the quiet for the putt is right there.

Encouragement is near-worth exchanging for goddess bodies and smart-aleck genius. For what pleases “the crowds” could dash ego — straight to sea’s depths — if the woman be against you.

They miss it, those wily, seductive sirens. Fearing “runner-up” status, in history’s annals, they perceive not the power in that boost they alone give.
