But what for? Success? But isn’t that subjective? So if there wasn’t any reason for me to continue what I was doing? Should I stop? No. Enough with all the formula’s for success. Enough with, ‘it…

2023 Elections and the future of Nigeria politics

The internal scramble for power in 2023

Election time is here again and this means different things to different people. For most Nigerians, the sense of hopelessness looms as the fate of the country once again hangs in the balance. Different politicians have started declaring their intentions and once again we are seeing history repeat itself. The old, washed up, corrupt politicians with several allegations and accusations of different crimes are the ones taking the front row in this scramble for the seat of power.

Although in some ways, things seem different this time around, we all seem to agree that we are in a helpless situation; in 2011, we were in a good position and the winner then, felt like the best choice for the job with his overly exaggerated grass to grace story; 2015, the air was filled with the idea of change, a change in government, a change that was going to bring an end to corrupt practices and terrorism and we were all going to have a new Nigeria; 2019, we were still hopeful that maybe the change we were promised might still come; but now, we have come to face the hard truth that hope might have been just a campaign strategy in the past and our case is helpless. We are left to pick the lesser evil and we might have to elect a tyrant and fully stamp the powers of godfatherism in Nigerian politics.

The chatter to get your voter’s card has already started, posters have started popping up, they even opened up Twitter and we are left thinking about the wonderful plan that came up during the 2020 END SARS protest of “not too young to run” but then, even if the young people run for the presidency, there is almost no assurance that they stand a chance against the “powers that be” but it doesn’t mean it can’t be done though, there would be a lot of hurdle and some obvious principalities and powers are going to try to plant discord among the youths but if a united youth party can be achieved, all hope might not be lost.

Campaign trails are also going to start soon and the selfishness of Nigerians will soon be exploited. Our sense of entitlement to the “national cake” and the mirage to take what we can while we can soon be exploited. Money will be shared and we won’t bother to vet these guys and make them earn the vote, we simply ask for them to pay for it. People would once again sell themselves for a cup of rice, they would sell the future of this country for some bottle of oil, religious and community leaders would betray the interest of their people all because of a few thousand notes and Judas’s will be on a seasonal high.

So, what is it going to be? We can never know for sure. Elections in Nigeria are not predictable, although whoever makes the most noise wins. It all feels familiar and certainly like a big hopeless merry-go-round that we have all experienced before and it’s really hard to paint hope for the Nigerian future, all we can just hope for is that; may the man with the lesser evil and maybe a little good intention win.
