CAUTION OF LAGOS ROAD SIDE CLEANERS

It is patriotic for the Lagos State Government and Sterling Bank to support the ‘Cleaner Lagos’ drive by recruiting quite a number of roadside cleaners and also creating a means of earning a leaving. But as usual, while I take a ride on a Lagos Danfobus, I make a lot of observations and learn a lot of lessons which I tell in stories.

Several times, I have noticed these roadside cleaners are usually unconscious of the way they position themselves while they clean the streets. On few occasions on my way to work in the morning, I have seen when a Danfo driver is throwing tantrums on a roadside cleaner, probably because of the way he/she bends down to sweep or position their cleaning materials by the road. Some of them don’t even use the vehicle caution signs too.

On a particle day, the Danfo bus I was in almost hit a roadside cleaner but not out of sheer carelessness. This particular plus size cleaner who was probably in her late 30’s while working, unconsciously bend her buttocks to park some dirt she had been cleaning. And there was our bus, approaching towards her at full speed. Everyone in the bus panicked. Lucky for her, our driver was able to swerve the bus away from her; narrow escape. Now imagine if there was a car right beside us with no way to manipulate.

“Cleanliness they say is next to Godliness.” However, caution should always be applied. I am using this medium to applaud the Lagos State Government and Sterling bank for the act of patriotism; and also to plead with them to properly orient these roadside cleaners while on duty to use their safety signs, always! They can also be provided with a Vehicle warning/caution indicators to make the job safer and avoid the risk of life.

Once again, I salute every patriotic citizen that makes an effort to keep our environment clean, but in all, safety comes first.
