Leading Industrial Units Through the Lock Down!

These are unprecedented times. All bets are off the table, as they were all created in the old world. The new world leaves us fighting to catch our breath.

As Karachi locks down, and other cities start to think about similar lock downs, large, medium and small industrial units have to start thinking fast about what’s the best way forward. The challenge between care and catering to the customer are critical.

If you speak with these organisations, their response is driven entirely in what the customer needs from them. Where the EU or US client demands that WHO requirements be met, they are being met. Information sessions are being conducted, facilities are being hosed down, and temperatures being taken for all staff as they enter the building, and high touch (such as security checks) are being avoided.

Is that going to be enough though? Conventional thinking will tell us that a virtual work place isn’t an answer, and the lock down will result in day wage workers being hit the hardest, and promises to clients being left unfulfilled and the losses at both a macro and micro level will grow so large that some may not be able to make it back on their feet. A 15 day lock down is impossible!

So where should anyone be turning to next? What’s the new kind of thinking that’s necessary around this. Who are all the stake holders?

There is an opportunity here though, to rethink the way we’ve always thought. The leadership need not pretend to have all the answers! Try an alternative mindset. A Design Thinkers solution may be a great place to start.

I would strongly recommend spending the time to find all the stake holders and hosting a conversation that equally includes all the relevant stakeholders. Create a group of “thinkers” for the organisation — including customers, workers, managers, leaders, and health care specialists that are relevant to the local context.

Following what some of the best companies are doing in the world, this group of thinkers must create at least some of the following:

Through this time, finding a new group of thinkers for your organisation is key and CHROs will have to take a lead in setting this inclusive group up quite quickly.
