Character Impacts Culture

The culture of your team is the life-blood of your organization. Establishing the right culture influences every single department. You can assemble the most talented people and sell the greatest product but without a positive and healthy culture you will not achieve excellence. Bad character corrupts good culture and when culture is corrupted, teams implode or explode. Team leaders hold the greatest responsibility because their personal character is often adopted by everyone around them.

Everyone wants good workplace culture but few are willing to demonstrate excellent character consistently. It takes humility, transparency, and accountability for a leader to remain strong every day. Unfortunately, few leaders focus on those areas of their leadership which means that their teams don’t either.

Over the last 2 years we have seen some of the greatest organizations of our time suffer due to the moral failure of their leaders or staff members. Too often we hear new stories of racial prejudice, sexual harassment, or unethical practices in the workplace. This is mainly due to the following:

• Suppression of personal moral standards
• Reoccurring problems going unaddressed
• Lack of accountability

As leaders, it is imperative that we develop a sense responsibility for their character of our team. Character is made up of our mental wiring and our moral standards. In order to be great, we must think and act with greatness in mind. Talent is useless without hard work but both will fail us without a foundation of good character.

Here are three ways to regenerate your staff’s culture by starting with character:

1. Encourage everyone to be themselves.
Work at developing a safe space for staff equity. Celebrate differences and make it a priority to learn about one another. Pair team members up and challenge them to learn three facts about each other. Create an environment where moral standards and personal life goals are cherished.

2. Create mentorship opportunities on staff.
Everyone needs a mentor. So why not create a mentorship program for your staff? Try pairing mentors and mentees together to help team members grow exponentially. This will unify your staff and give everyone a sense of personal value.

3. Make accountability fun.
Use your creativity to promote accountability without scaring everyone away. Remember the old swear jar? It probably started as a joke but ended up cleaning the language of the group that implemented it. The goal is to create a culture of consciousness so that every team member wants to be held accountable.

The better the character, the stronger the culture. Grow in your leadership today by building character and being contagious!
