A Broken Heart for the Sex Trafficked

The abuse of the vulnerable brings pain to my heart.

My heart breaks for those who have been victims of sex trafficking. I can’t fathom the pain they go through. It’s a reckless evil. Lies, manipulation, and tons of sin are how they got to where they are.

I live close to one of the biggest “sex trafficking,” Interstate 80, specifically the “World’s Largest Truckstop.” I don’t know the stats of all the people trafficked on I-80, but regardless it pains me to think of it. I am reminded of this reality every time I drive on this road. I am plagued with thoughts wondering if a girl is in the back of that semi-trailer. Driving past the truck stop brings me to tears thinking a woman could be being sold as I drive past.

Ever since being friends with my now wife, I have had a passion for victims of sex trafficking, specifically women. I am very aware that men can be taken and trafficked to, I don’t want to overlook that at all. That is heartbreaking and tragic. My heart is passionate about all victims, but women are trafficked more frequently than men so that has most of my attention. My wife has always had a passion for helping women who have experienced trauma. She was brought to tears many times as we dated even at the mention of a girl being taken. That is what has made me so passionate. Thinking of my wife being taken, tortured, raped, sold, and used is a sickening thought. Seeing her vulnerability has grown my compassion and desire to care for women.

I believe men need to protect women. There are many women who are tougher and stronger than me, I won’t deny that. Protection is more than physical strength. Men need to be giving emotional and mental care and protection, on top of physical protection if it is needed. We need more men who will lay their lives down for vulnerable women. We need more men who truly care about the great gift of women. God has blessed us men with women. They are a gift to be cherished, not passed around.

I’m tired of seeing men who don’t care or who don’t place value on their daughters, wives, sisters, co-workers, friends, or female strangers. The world needs more caring men, men who put the needs of women above themselves. We need to protect the gift God has given us. Sex trafficking needs to break the hearts of more men so that more men feel the weight of it.

I am so excited for Jesus’ return for so many reasons. The sin of this world, including trafficking vulnerable people, will be no more. All sin will be taken care of. There will no longer be men who forcefully overpower women and use them. God will be reigning perfectly. The vulnerable will be in unity with the God who made them.

What can we do? For starters, I think we all need more education in this field. Talk to people on how to handle these situations, or how we should talk to victims. If you are a man reading this, consider your relationships with the women in your life. Fight for them, care for them, and love them as Jesus loves you. We all need to set an example of what it means to be loved. Display Jesus’ love in all we do. Care for the lost and broken. Protect the vulnerable. Live out the gospel. PRAY.

I am currently reading a book titled “Until Every Child Is Home” by Todd R. Chipman. Its main focus is fostering and adopting children, but a few chapters are heavily involved with sex trafficking. That is what sparked me to write this. It might not be put together all that well or make the most sense. I wrote this all while a passion was burning in my heart. Reading those chapters relit a fire in my heart caring for the vulnerable women who are trafficked. My purpose in writing this isn’t to diminish any other sin or someone’s personal trauma, this was just prevalent in my heart. I long for the safety of women, but I know that won’t fully come until Christ returns. Until that day, however, we can all fight for the vulnerable, needy, and lost. We should be seeking to share the gospel and live it out until Jesus comes back. We won’t reach perfect unity on this side of eternity, but that doesn’t mean we sit around and do nothing. We are called to love and exhort one another. Live out the good news daily until we are in eternity with Jesus forever. We have a responsibility here on Earth; love God first and out of that love we love others.

Go and love the broken, vulnerable, and needy.

If you have been or are currently being abused, turn to Jesus. There is light in him alone. He is your only true hope. There is light at the end of the tunnel. He is true love, look to him for comfort. Seek professional help as well. God can use people on Earth for your safety and help.
