SETTING UP A PRIVATE AND SELF HOSTED CLOUD USING DOCKER AND NEXTCLOUD

Docker is an open-source platform for containerization, allowing developers to package and run applications in a portable and scalable manner. Nextcloud is an open-source file sharing and collaboration platform, providing users with a secure and customizable alternative to commercial cloud services. Together, Docker and Nextcloud provide a powerful and flexible solution for file sharing and collaboration that can be customized to meet the unique needs of any organization or business.

Now, lets start setting up our own self hosted cloud.

1. Docker should be installed on your pc.

2. Nextcloud App should be installed on your mobile phone.

3. Check your IP address from your pc by opening command prompt on Windows and typing the following.

Note IPv4 Address, as we will be using this to host our cloud.

1. Run Docker daemon.

2. Create Nextcloud and mysql containers in docker. Type the following commands on command prompt.

(note: all the things wrapped by square brackets are the names you choose yourself and (your-ip) is your IP Address that we noted above)

After that use the following commands for executing the mysql server and creating a database in it.

2. Once the below page opens create your account by entering username and password.

Now, we will connect our Nextcloud account with our mysql database.

2. Database name contains the (database-name) that we created in mysql.

3. Database host contains (your-ip):3306, this IP is the IP address we used while creating Nextcloud container.

1. Add Another user by going to your profile in the right top corner and selecting users from there.

2. Then click on New user at the left side of the screen.

3. Then add user, shown as following.

Open Nextcloud app from your phone and click on login.

Then perform the following steps

You can upload files from your phone by pressing on +. The files will be visible on your phone and your PC as well.

Use the following commands on command prompt to access the Nextcloud files.

This will show all the files available on your cloud and you can access them here.

Note: This will only work if your PC is connected to the same network( IP Address).
